The early years
Vern Gardner was born on May 14, 1925 in the city of Afton ( Wyoming ), he studied there at Star Valley High School, in which he played for the local basketball team.
Student career
In 1949 he graduated from the University of Utah , where for four years he played for the Utah Utes basketball team, in which he spent a successful career. Under Gardner, Utes never won the regular championship of the Mountain States Athletic conference , nor did they enter the playoffs of the US student championship [1] [2] [3] [4] .
In 1947, Utah Utes basketball became champions of the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) , defeating the University of Kentucky 's Kentucky Wildcats 49–45 in the final match, and Vern Gardner, having scored 17 points in the decisive game, was recognized the most valuable player of the tournament [5] . For three consecutive years, as part of Utes, Vern joined the team of all stars of the Mountain States Athletic conference, and in the 1946/1947 and 1948/1949 seasons he became the team's best sniper, for which, according to their results, he joined the 2nd all-American NCAA team [6 ] [7] . Sweater number 33, under which Gardner played for Utah Utes, was assigned to him and taken out of use.
Professional career
He played as a heavy forward and center . In 1949, Vern Gardner was selected in the BAA draft under number 5 by the Philadelphia Warriors team, who played at the National Basketball Association (NBA) , in which he spent his entire short professional career. In total, the NBA spent 3 seasons [8] , during which Gardner played 151 games in which he scored 1339 points (an average of 8.9 per game), made 349 rebounds and 245 assists [9] .
Further career and death
After completing his player’s sports career, Gardner became a school coach and physical education teacher, first at Star Valley's hometown and then at Bonneville High School in Washington Terrace .
Vern Gardner died on Wednesday, August 26, 1987 , at the 63rd year of his life from a stroke in Ogden , Utah . He left his wife Joanna and six children [10] .
