Formation History
The division was formed in 1920 as the 7th Turkestan Cavalry Brigade (the former 1st Turkestan Cavalry Brigade deployed from the 1st Orenburg Labor Cossacks Cavalry Regiment .).
In 1920, she participated in battles on the Eastern Turkestan and Trans-Caspian fronts, in 1921 - in the elimination of the Basmachi gangs of the Emir of Bukhara, Ibrahim-bek, in the Baysun , Dyushanbe ( Dushanbe ) Alim Pasha and others in the Samarkand region (January - April 1923) , in Western Bukhara (July - September 1923), in the Termez-Sharabad region (December 1923), in the Surkhan-Darya Valley (1925), in the Karakum operation (June - July 1926), against Djunaid Khan in Turkmenistan (October . - Dec. 1927), detachments that crossed from Afghanistan in the Aivarga region (May 1930), in operations against Ibrahim-bek and his capture (May - June 1931). During the war years
At the end of October 1941, the 20th Mountain Cavalry Division was redeployed from the Central Asian Military District to the Western Front.
On October 25, 1941, the division entered the battle of Moscow. By the Directive of the Supreme High Command Headquarters of November 12, 1941 from 12:00 on November 12, the 20th Mountain Cavalry Division in the Solnechnogorsk region was transferred from the reserve of the Supreme High Command to the Western Front. On November 14, 1941, the 20th Mountain Cavalry Division was transferred from the reserve of the Western Front to the 16th Army.
The division operated in the Solnechnogorsk direction.
At 9.30 a.m. on November 18, 1941, the division reached the Medvedkovo-Pristanino-Aksenovo line, where it took up defense. On December 1, 1941, the division became part of the 2nd Guards Cavalry Corps, Major General L. M. Dovator.
On December 1, 1941, the division, together with the 4th Guards Cavalry Division, concentrated in the Kazaryevo-Dzhunkovka area.
On December 2, 1941, the 2nd Guards Cavalry Corps was withdrawn to the army reserve. Participating in a counteroffensive near Moscow, the division fought in the areas of Istra, Apalshchina, Kubinka, Gorbovo and other areas.
On December 11, 1941, the 2nd Guards Cavalry Corps of General L. M. Dovator, transferred from the 16th Army (the 3rd and 4th Guards and 20th Cavalry Divisions), was introduced into the breakthrough and hit the rear of Istra enemy groupings promoted the advance of the right flank of the army in the direction of Ruza.
On December 30, 1941, the division concentrated in the Karabuzino area as part of the 16th Army.
In January 1942, the 20th Mountain Cavalry Division was reorganized into the 20th Cavalry Division .
In August 1942, as part of the 20th Army, the division participated in the Rzhev-Sychev offensive operation . Subsequently, she made bold raids on enemy rear in the areas of the cities of Gzhatsk, Sychevka, Rzhev, and Bely. From November 1942 to January 1943, cavalrymen raided German rear to a depth of 380 km.
In February-March 1943, instead of the 20th Cavalry Division during the Sevsk offensive operation of the Central Front, the 7th Division, which arrived with the 19th Corps from the Far East, operated as part of the 2nd Guards Cavalry Corps.
In the 1st half of 1943, the division was consistently in the reserve of a number of fronts and the Supreme Command.
At the end of July 1943, the division was transferred to the Western Front (transferred to the Bryansk Front on July 30) and successfully conducted combat operations north of the city of Karachev and in the Dyatkovo direction during the Oryol offensive.
In September - early October 1943, as part of the 50th Army, then the front-line mobile group under the command of Lieutenant General M.I. Kazakov, and from September 30 - the 63rd Army, the division participated in the Bryansk offensive operation.
On September 18, 1943, the 20th Cavalry Division was transformed into the 17th Guards Cavalry Division for the difference in the battles during the crossing of the Desna River . .New numbering of units of the division was assigned on October 20, 1943.

In November 1943, the division participated in the Gomel-Rechitsa offensive operation.
In January - February 1944, the division participated in the Kalinkovich-Mozyr offensive operation.
In July - August 1944, the division conducted offensive battles in the Lublin-Brest operation of the 1st Belorussian Front, during which July 22 crossed the Western Bug River in the area of Wlodawa and entered Poland.
On July 24, 1944, the division participated in the liberation of the city of Lukov ( Lukow ), and on July 31 - the city of Siedlec ( Siedlce ).
On August 12, 1944, the regiments were awarded the Order of Alexander Nevsky for the exemplary fulfillment of command tasks during the crossing of the Western Bug River and the capture of the cities of Lukov and Siedlec.
In the Warsaw-Poznan operation, the regiment, acting from the Magnuszew bridgehead, successfully advanced in the direction of Kutno , Bromberg ( Bydgoszcz ). For the crossing of the Vistula River and the seizure of the cities of Lodz , Kutno , Tomashev , Gastinin , Lynchitsa , the valor and courage shown by the guards cavalry regiments were awarded the Order of Suvorov, 3rd class .
In March 1945, the division participated in the destruction of the East Pomeranian enemy group.
In the Berlin offensive operation, the division crossed the Spree River twice and on April 25, together with other units, captured the important stronghold on the southeastern approaches to Berlin - the city of Shtorkov . On May 3, 1945, with battles, the division reached the eastern bank of the Elbe River near the city of Vilsnak , where it met Victory Day.
After the war
On October 13, 1945, by Ordinance of the General Staff of the USSR Armed Forces of October 13, 1945 No. Org / 1/600, the 2nd Guards Cavalry Corps was disbanded. By December 1, 1945, according to the order of the NPO of the USSR No. 0013 dated 06/10/1945, the 17th Guards Cavalry Mozyr of the Orders of Lenin, Suvorov and Kutuzov was transformed into the 28th Guards Mechanized Division , which included, folded into regiments, the former 3rd I, 4th and 17th guards cavalry divisions of the corps.

The 28th Guards Mechanized Division received the honorary name Pomeranian and the Order of the Red Banner and Suvorov from the 2nd Guards Cavalry Corps, and the 28th Guards Mechanized Pomeranian Red Banner Order of the Suvorov Division became known. In 1957, the 28th Guards Mechanized Division was reorganized into the 40th Guards Tank Pomeranian Red Banner Order of the Suvorov Division .
Facts
