Biography
Catherine was the daughter of the Polish magnate Jan Karl Opalinsky and Sofia Tsarnkovskaya . On May 10, 1698, she married Stanislav Leshchinsky in Krakow . In 1699 their first daughter Anna was born, died in 1717, in 1703 the second daughter Maria , the future Queen of France, the wife of Louis XV , was born.
In 1704, her husband became the king of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania thanks to the Swedish king Charles XII . In 1709, he was overthrown when the Swedish army lost power in Poland. The family of Catherine left for Sweden. Settled in the city of Kristianstad . [1] In Sweden, she made good friends with the Dowager Queen Gedwig Eleanor . The Polish royal family was very popular in Sweden, they were often invited to receptions by Swedish aristocrats. In 1712, Catherine visited the baths of Medevi. [1] In 1714, with the permission of Charles XII, the family moved to Zweibrucken , a Swedish province in Germany. There they lived until the death of the king in 1718. [1] After his death, the family moved to France, where he settled in Alsace.
In 1725, daughter Maria was chosen as the wife of the French king Louis XV. Ekaterina Opalinskaya became the mother-in-law of the French king. After the wedding, the daughters Catherine and Stanislav lived in the Chateau du Chambord .
In 1737, Stanislav became the ruling Duke of Lorraine , Catherine received the title of Duchess . Unlike Stanislav, Catherine never adapted to life in France or Lorraine, she missed her native Poland. The former queen was described as “a kind-hearted, homely and charity-loving woman, but at the same time a rather harsh and boring person . ” [2] As soon as her husband became the Duke of Lorraine, he had a large number of mistresses, including Catherine of Ossolinskaya, Anna Maria Ossolinskaya, Maria Louise de Linanges, Madame de Bassompierre and Madame de Cumbress . Since 1745, Stanislav had a permanent relationship with the Marquise de Bourflez . Catherine could not prevent all these relationships. [3]
Catherine died on March 19, 1747. On the day of her death, her son-in-law King Louis XV ordered a memorial ceremony at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris . Catherine’s grave is located in Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecos in Nancy , Stanislav and daughter Anna are buried nearby.
