However, the artist does not break ties with Ukraine. Severny's first exhibition was held in Nikolaev in the early 80s, which was organized by the local art critic Valery Malina. The real discovery of the artist occurred after the exhibition at the Institute of Art Studies, Folklore and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences (1982) and the Union of Writers of Ukraine (1983). Then there were exhibitions in the library of the medical institute, where then Ivan Marchuk and others were exhibited, at the Institute of Semiconductors of Ukraine with the active support of the chairman Pavel Zagrebelny (1983.1986), in the Or gallery (director M. The works of Vladimir Kabachenko (Odessa), Fedor Panchuk (Vinnitsa), Olesya Semerni (Nikolaev - then he lived in Voznesensk) and Anatoly Furlet (Khmelnitsky) harmoniously combined. It was a strange quartet that sang a Ukrainian folk song, so bright in color, meaningful in its national folklore foundation and graceful for its creation. In 1994, with a group of Kiev artists, they turned to the Culture Department of the Pechersk District State Administration with a proposal to turn Kostelnaya, one of the most beautiful streets of Old Kiev, into the Street of Arts. Having received support and examined non-residential premises, which were extremely neglected, they won the tender on a competitive basis and made repairs and design on their own. As a result, the "Cultural and Art Center on Kostelnaya" was created, with 7 art galleries and 8 creative workshops. With the Griffin Gallery, Oles Semernya begins his collaboration by exhibiting his works there. In the summer of 1996, Semerni’s works took part in the I International Art Festival, which was held in the capital's Ukrainian House. Among 52 domestic and foreign galleries, the exposition of the Griffin gallery with works by Semerny was recognized as the best - awarded the Grand Prix. At the same time, an invitation was received from Harvard University to an exhibition in the United States. Multi-colored birds flew to Harvard, who were already born in independent Ukraine. Among the works of eight artists from different parts of Ukraine (Professor Roman Shporlyuk, director of the Institute, had such a wish), there were paintings by Oles Semeni. 1996 works by the maestro surprised Americans (mainly of Ukrainian origin) except Harvard, even in New York (Ukraine’s Representation at the United Nations and the Ukrainian Institute of America (UIA), adjacent to the prestigious Fifth Avenue and the Metropolitan Museum of Art), in Washington (Ukrainian Embassy in the USA), Philadelphia (in the Ukrainian cultural center) [1] .

Self assessment

Here is how Oles Semernya speaks about his own work:

“I live in a house, without a TV, computer. I have a stove where I cook myself, a well. I’m not hiding from the sun, so I’m so tanned, ”the artist laughs. - I take plots for my work from life. The faces of my heroes in the paintings are similar to mine. Probably all artists are so led that they paint themselves first of all. ”
My dear golden friends! I am happy that you value me so highly. I will try to remain in the same quality so as not to disappoint you and I will continue to tirelessly create my masterpieces so that they bring you joy. I hug Sincerely your Oles Semen from the weeds "Turkish Valley".

Reviews

The master’s world is a space of legend and myth, song and fairy tale, ancient customs and rural everyday life, which preserves all these magical treasures, and to the brim full of them (“Landscape-Bukovina”). The life of the characters of Olesya Semerny is monumental and involved in Eternity, but at the same time full of some touching credulity ("Legend", "Birthday", "Mother's Song"). His shepherds and angels, mothers and warriors, Eve (“Eve and Kobzar”) and Europe (“The Rape of Europe”) live behind the eternal and harmonious laws of the Universe, thereby preserving and protecting it, but they themselves are issued - and will turn out to be completely defenseless before the fact that it is disharmonious - but, fortunately, transient ("Shepherd's Day", "Angel", "Steppe Violinist").

Oksana Lamonova

“When you felt like warming yourself, breathing in your native Prestep, or moving away with your soul, remember the pictures of Olesya Semerny. In them is the health of the nation, and the true essence of the original Ukrainian soul, softened, talking with God and the stars, with a child and a stalk, with sad oxen and funny beans of lambs. That of all - with itself. There - powerful and good talent, creates a united Ukraine, so sometimes it’s even hard to find out whether it is the Carpathians or the Ukrainian south, and only the red-hot Olbia sun makes all colors brighter, unmistakably points to the artists' roots. There is a restless Cossack Mamai with a quiet skate and a handful of purely childish tricks. There is a very lonely person who, in the middle of a crazy world, tells the golden tale of our childhood. May God grant him health and inspiration. ”

Ivan Malkovich

“He has his own amazing style, rooted in folk painting. Three Andrews. Two in profile, one in the eye. Clothes tails. Women's fate. Millstone eggs. Down with rich colors. Agrafena. Circle with poppy seeds. Woman circle. Original Ryamtsi. My ancestors. Above the houses in the rays of the sky. Concerned as they were here. The abduction of Europe. Red Bull. Wreath. Water grass. Steppe violinist; Native roots. Juiciness, expressiveness. Portrait of Ivan Marchuk. Angel in the form of a woman. Shepherd's holiday. Sheeps. Egg with eyes. The clouds. Kozak Mamai. Winter landscape. Legend. Wrinkled face. So, whoever has ever seen this miracle - the painting of this outstanding Bukovinian artist - has a good mood and enjoyment without measure. ”
Vasily Velimchiy

“Oles Semernya, the creator of the gently-melodic Ukrainian soul, left us from earthly life, leaving us his immortal creations. His paintings are a Miracle, because in them is a mystery. The beauty of Semerny’s paintings is somewhat incomprehensible, perhaps for modern youth, because her soul neither in childhood (especially in childhood!), Nor in youth touched a purely national commercial and mental tradition. But the incomprehensibility of that beauty and the meaning of art. Because then we strive nevertheless to understand that secret. Secret of Beauty. This is probably why the usual situation is when, during collective exhibitions, fans enthusiastically stop at Olesya's paintings. Although nearby - the creation of fashionable contemporaries. Because in their paintings in the foreground are the basic principles of modernity and partly - loud emptyness that it gave rise to lies, insincerity with a bright, and even mostly impudent, aggressive form. A completely different situation with Oles Semernya. From birth to his last days, his soul was consciously filled with pitch of Ukrainian folk traditions. His infinite wanderings were filled with the ways of Ukraine (and even Moldova) ... ”.
Nikolay Volga

Severny paintings are mainly on the Hutsul theme. He portrays men with violins, with a Christmas star, shows their strong friendship. But women are ugly, because they drank all the blood from him, says the artist. Therefore, they are depicted both on the roof of the house, then on a tree: so as not to interfere with drawing. But despite all the jokes, the work of Oles Semerny is warm in feelings and deep in content.
