Biography
Born in the family of Elvis Star, a judge in Fulton County, Kentucky. In 1936, after graduating from the University of Kentucky , he continued his studies at Merton College, Oxford Law School. He then practiced law in New York and studied Chinese at Yale University . During World War II, he served in combat units in China with the rank of lieutenant colonel of the US Army.
After the war, he continued his legal practice in New York. In 1947 he became a professor of law at the University of Kentucky. Soon he took the position of dean of the law college of the University of Kentucky , which he held until 1956, when he was elected president of the university, participated in the process of desegregation of higher education. During the Korean War, took a 16-month vacation to served as a special assistant to the US Army Secretary Frank Pace .
