Biography
Born March 9, 1771 in the family of General Sir Henry Clinton . The grandson of Admiral and the younger brother of Lieutenant General Sir William Henry Clinton .
Officer rank received in 1787. In 1793 he participated in the campaign in Flanders as adjutant to the Duke Frederick of York . He received the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1795. He was captured by the French in 1796-1797.
In 1799, during a campaign in Northern Italy, Henry Clinton was a liaison officer with the commander of the Russian army, Alexander Suvorov.
Then he went to India, where from 1802 to 1805 he was adjutant general. In the battle of Austerlitz in 1805, Clinton was a British military attaché for the Russian army. Then he commanded a garrison in Syracuse in Sicily (in 1806-1807).
Becoming a member of parliament for Borobridge in 1808 [3] , Henry Clinton combined state and military activities for the next ten years.
During the military campaign of 1808–1809, he served as Adjutant General of Sir John Moore and participated in the on January 16, 1809. In 1810 he was promoted to major general .
In 1815, during the Battle of Waterloo , Clinton commanded the 2nd Division, which was part of the 3rd British Brigade under the command of Frederick Adam, which the Duke Wellington sent to the reserve of the right flank. The division participated in the pursuit of Napoleon's troops.
In 1818, Henry Clinton retired and settled on his estate in Hampshire, where he died on December 11, 1829 .
Awards
- He was awarded the Order of St. George 3rd degree (№ 384, August 6, 1815 - "to commemorate the excellent courage and feats rendered in the last campaign against the French" ).
- He was also awarded other orders, including the English Order of the Bath and the Royal Guelph Order , the Austrian Military Order of Maria Theresa [4] and the Dutch Military Order of Wilhelm .
