List of species of ants of Andorra

Red-chested wood-tree ant ( Camponotus herculeanus ), the largest species of local myrmecofauna.

The list of species of ants of Andorra includes all species of ants (family Formicidae , order Hymenoptera ) that live in Andorra . The list consists of binomen (two-word names, consisting of a combination of the genus name and the species name) and the name of the scientist who first described this taxon and the year in which it happened indicated next to them [1] .

General characteristics

According to 2013 data, the Andorran world-fauna includes 75 species of ants. Among them, Central European species dominate (typical representatives of the temperate climate zone); species of the Mediterranean fauna are also represented. This is due to the border location of Andorra between France and Spain and the presence of zones of different heights. In a systematic respect, 21 genera of 4 ant subfamilies ( Dolichoderinae , Formicinae , Myrmicinae , Ponerinae ) are represented. The most diverse in the local fauna are the subfamily Myrmicinae (36 species, i.e. almost half of the entire ant fauna) and the genera Formica (14 species) and Temnothorax (12). The previously erroneously mentioned invasive house species Monomorium pharaonis is excluded from the list [1] .

Andorra, although it has a small territory (468 km 2 ) [2] , but it has a relatively large and diverse world of fauna. For example, in neighboring France, 213 species of ants (one third in Andorra) live [3] , and 299 species (a quarter) [1] [4] are found on the Iberian Peninsula ( Spain and Portugal ).
