About the song
Record
According to Trent Reznor, the composition was completed after working on the Broken album. Originally “Piggy” was a poem and was not seen as a future track. But later the text was expanded to a full song. Musical parts were recorded after Reznor rented a house where actress Sharon Tate was killed in 1969 [1] [2] . In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the musician said that he “looked at a lot of buildings and that [he] liked the most” [2] .
Music and Lyrics
This is the first NIN song in which the line appeared: “ nothing can stop me now” ( English “nothing can stop me now” ) - the song ends on it. Later, this phrase appears in several songs of the group: “Ruiner”, “Big Man with a Gun” (from the album The Downward Spiral ) [3] [4] [5] , “We're in This Together”, “La Mer "(From the album The Fragile ) [6] [7] [8] and" Sunspots "(from the album With Teeth ) [9] .
In general, the song is slow and quiet, having a musical tempo of 65 beats per minute and performed in B # key. “Piggy” is the first track of the album, which contains the “ leitmotif of the album”, it is performed on the organ [10] .
The fierce, inconsistent knock at the end of the Piggy was performed by Reznor himself. At the moment, this is the first and only record of Reznor’s drumming, and one of several live drum parts on the album. Reznor began it by testing the microphone, but he liked the sound so much that he decided to leave it [11] .
Song Versions
In 1995, a remix of Rick Rubin on “Piggy” (also known under the subheading “Nothing Can Stop Me Now”) was released on the album Further Down the Spiral [12] . He was also released on the anniversary re-release of The Downward Spiral in 2004 [13] . Former “ Jane's Addiction” and “ Red Hot Chili Peppers” guitarist Dave Navarro participated in Piggy (Nothing Can Stop Me Now). [12] When recording the remix, a small sample of Fatback’s song “Put Your Love in My Tender Care” was used . This version of “Piggy” was performed by NIN during the concert tours of Dissonance and Wave Goodbye [14] .
Another version of the song - “Ghosts Piggy” - was performed during the Lights in the Sky tour, in the section where the group played tracks from the Ghosts I – IV album. At the performance, the melody “Ghosts Piggy” passed from another Nine Inch Nails composition “19 Ghosts III”.
There is also an instrumental version of “Piggy”, released on remix.nin.com , where you can create a remix of a song.
