Biography
He was born on April 24, 1908 in the village of Kulashi, now Samtred district of the Republic of Georgia, in a peasant family. Georgian. In 1926 he graduated from school, after he entered the mechanical courses of tractor drivers in Tbilisi, at the same time he studied at the Law Faculty of Tbilisi University for 4 years.
In the Red Army in 1928-1932. He served in the 2nd Georgian Rifle Regiment in the city of Batumi . In 1930, with him he graduated from infantry courses of commanders, after which he served as commander of a small platoon. Member of the CPSU (b) since 1932.
After demobilization in the 30s, he worked as secretary of the party district committee in Tbilisi. In 1939 he was awarded the rank of junior lieutenant , in 1940 - senior political instructor.
A second mobilization drafted into the Red Army in June 1941. Member of the Great Patriotic War since July 1941. He was deputy chief of the political department of the rifle division, instructor of the political department of the front, commander of the rifle battalion, deputy commander of the rifle regiment. He fought on the South, Transcaucasian, North Caucasian, again South, 4th and 3rd Ukrainian, 1st Belorussian fronts. In battles four times wounded.
Participated:
- 1941 - in defensive battles in Ukraine near the cities of Mogilyov-Podolsky, Pervomaisk, Nikopol, in the defense of Donbass, in the liberation of Rostov;
- 1942 - in battles on the Mius river, in battles in the North Caucasus, including in the area of the city of Nalchik, the village of Elkhotovo, the Cherek River;
- 1943 - in the battles on the Blue Line in Taman, in the breakthrough of the Mius Front , in the liberation of Donbass and the Zaporizhzhya region, including the city of Donetsk, in battles on the Molochnaya River and in the steppes of the Kherson region;
- 1944 - in the forcing of the Dnieper and the liberation of the cities of Kherson, Nikolaev, Odessa, in battles on the Dniester bridgehead, in the Iasi-Chisinau operation, including the liberation of the city of Chisinau, in battles on the Vistula river south of Warsaw;
- 1945 - in the Vistula-Oder operation, including the liberation of the cities of Wloclawek, Gniezno, in the forcing of the Oder with the conquest of the Kyustrinsky bridgehead, in the assault on Berlin.
On the night of March 13, 1944, with the battalion, crossed the Dnieper near the city of Kherson, captured the enemy’s fortifications on the right bank of the river, inflicting heavy damage on the enemy. The battalion was the first to break into the city of Kherson.
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 3, 1944 for exemplary performance of command missions at the front of the struggle against Nazi invaders and the courage and heroism shown to this, Major Shengeli Georgy Davidovich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal (No. 3458).
Since November 1945, Major G. D. Shengelia has been retired. He lived and worked in the city of Tbilisi, was the manager of the Georgian office of Glavraisbyt and the Transcaucasian branch of Zagotoborg, was elected secretary of the party’s district committee, and worked as chairman of the DOSAAF Tbilisi city committee. He did a lot of work on military-patriotic education of youth. He died on December 22, 1983. He was buried in Tbilisi [1] .
Recognition and memory
An honorary citizen of the city of Kherson (the title was awarded by decision No. 50 of the IV session of the Council of Workers' Deputies of the 11th convocation No. 49 dated October 31, 1967), on the Quarantine Island in Kherson (the Korabel microdistrict, part of the Ship District ) there is Shengelia Street [2] [3] .
He was awarded the orders of Lenin (06/03/1944), Alexander Nevsky (07/15/1944), World War 1 degree (01/30/1945), medals "For the Defense of the Caucasus", "For the capture of Berlin", "For the victory over Germany" [1 ] .
