Svetlana Ivanovna Gerasimenko (born , ) is a Soviet and Tajik astronomer, discoverer of the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko , laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Tajikistan for achievements in science and technology named after Abu Ali ibn Sino (Avicenna) for 2017 for the discovery of the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko [1]

Biography
She was born in 1945 in the village of Baryshevka in the Kiev region in a family of hereditary teachers [2] .
In 1968 she graduated from the Department of Astronomy at Kiev University, and subsequently entered graduate school. In September 1969, together with Klim Churyumov , an employee of the Main Astronomical Observatory of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine , she went on an expedition to Alma-Ata to observe comets using a fifty - centimeter telescope . On the night of September 11-12, 1969, while observing the comet Comas-Sol, they took a photo showing another comet, named after the discoverers - Comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko .
In 1973, at the invitation of the Institute of Astrophysics of Tajikistan, she moved to Dushanbe . Now she works as a scientific employee of this institute, conducts observations and studies of comets.
On March 2, 2004, Svetlana Gerasimenko, along with Klim Churyumov, was present at the Kourou Cosmodrome in French Guiana during the launch of the European Rosetta interplanetary probe, which went to the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko . The probe reached the comet in November 2014 , and on November 12, the Fila landing module detached from it, which performed a 7-hour rendezvous and during the interval 18: 33 ... 20: 33 Moscow time made the first successful landing on the comet (three landings with two bounces).
Asteroid No. 3945, discovered in 1982 by Nikolai Chernykh [3] , was also named after Svetlana Gerasimenko.
