Biography
In 1813-1817 he studied theology and philosophy at the University of Marburg , where he was among the organizers of the student organization Burschenschaft .
In 1819-1822 he worked as a teacher in the gymnasium in Hanau . Then he continued his studies in Halle. Under the leadership of Wilhelm Gezenius studied Oriental languages. In 1824 he underwent the process of habilitation , in 1825 became an extraordinary professor of theology at the University of Marburg , from 1827 - professor of oriental languages. In 1843 he replaced Wilhelm Gesenius at the University of Halle .
Scientific Activities
The main scientific merit of G. Hupfeld - a great contribution to the criticism of the Old Testament texts, and especially the Pentateuch .
In 1853, he published the monograph Die Quellen der Genesis und die Art ihrer Zusammensetzung , in which his first theory of sources first appeared, and thanks to the work of J. Wellgausen , which quickly spread in Europe and America.
G. Gupfeld is considered one of the first representatives of the criticism of the Biblical Psalter . In addition, he conducted a large research work on the Hebraic texts and the Book of Job .
Being engaged in active teaching, G. Gupfeld actively participated in church, political and academic life. He called for reforms in the church and the state.
