History

In 1781, the Sterlitamak salt marina was elevated to the status of a city by the Highest Decree, received the name Sterlitamak and became the administrative center of the Sterlitamak district of Ufa governorate . In accordance with the new status, the city receives its emblem. In the decree of the empress on his approval, a description of the city symbol is given:

In the upper part of the shield is the coat of arms of Ufa . In the bottom - three floating silver gooses in a blue field, as a sign of the great abundance of these birds. [one]

The author of the coat of arms was the heraldmeister, real state adviser A.A. Volkov .

With the abolition of Ufa governorship and the incorporation of its territory into the Orenburg province in 1796, the coat of arms of Sterlitamak underwent changes. In the newspaper "Orenburg Provincial Gazette" (1846) it was said that in a new form it was:

a golden shield, divided across by a blue stripe depicting the Sterl River, up to half of the shield comes out half of the Imperial Russian double-headed eagle , and in the bottom - three swimming swans ... [2]

After the division of the Orenburg province in 1865 into the Orenburg and Ufa provinces, the Sterlitamak district became part of the latter. In this regard, it was decided to return to the original coat of arms of the county town.

In the Soviet years, the emblem of the city remained the same: marten from the Ufa coat of arms in the upper field and three silver gooses in the lower field, however, there were projects to create a new coat of arms of Sterlitamak, which would include industrial motifs, reflecting the main sectors of the city industry : chemical , petrochemical , mechanical engineering .

On July 18, 2006, the Council of the urban district, the city of Sterlitamak, adopted an updated version of the previously existing coat of arms [2] , which still includes, however, an image of a marten in the upper field. This option lasted only a few months, being canceled on November 1, 2006 at the recommendation of the Heraldic Council under the President of the Russian Federation . Then the current drawing of the coat of arms was adopted, from which the element of the coat of arms of the Ufa governorship - marten was excluded [3] .

On April 24, 2007, in honor of the 225th anniversary of the approval of the historical coat of arms, a decision was made to consider June 8 as the date of celebration of the Day of Sterlitamak Coat of Arms [4] .

By the decision of the city council of November 13, 2007 a full version of the coat of arms with a frame was adopted [5] .

The meaning of the modern coat of arms

As a sign of Sterlitamak’s non-affiliation to Ufa governorship [3], the current coat of arms of the city does not include images of the “Ufa” marten. The image on the stamped field of geese is now connected with the relevance for a large industrial center of environmental issues. The azure color of the field also reflects the importance of environmental issues for the city, being at the same time a “symbol of beauty and greatness” [3] , while the silver color of the elements is a symbol of “faith, honesty and nobility” [3] of the townspeople.
