Holocaust
The crew of the 708th separate military transport aviation regiment (based in Kirovabad ) on an An-8 aircraft with hull number 41 performed a training flight for landing. The flight was carried out along the circular route Kirovabad - Akstafa - Tbilisi - Mozdok - Makhachkala - Cape Izberbash - Yevlakh - Gerani - Kirovabad at night and in difficult weather conditions. After passing Izberbash and turning to the NBP, the crew admitted that the plane began to leave to the left east of the route. A reduction was also started from a height of 5100 to 1500 meters, and it was carried out with a doubled vertical speed - 10 m / s, instead of the specified 5 m / s. After some time, the An-8 flying in the clouds crashed into the snowy slope of the Main Caucasus Range at the Tsailakhan Mountain ( , height 3546 meters) on the border of the Dagestan ASSR and the Azerbaijan SSR . Having crashed just a few meters from the ridge, the car completely collapsed, and some of the debris even flew to the opposite slope. All people on board died [1] .
Reasons
According to the commission of inquiry, the poor organization and management of flights led to the disaster (the line of the beginning of the descent was chosen incorrectly, the commander and the navigator arbitrarily increased the speed of descent, the crew was not prepared for the flight), as well as the crew’s error in maintaining the track line and determining the line of the beginning of the descent [1] .
