The cup made of silver was made by the French jeweler Michel Chobillon in 1958 [1] ; it is a large vessel, similar to an amphora. Presented in 1960, the original trophy before the 2008 championship was slightly increased in size: now it began to weigh 8 kg, and its length increased to 60 cm [2] . Since then, an updated cup has been awarded.

Henri Delaunay Cup is the property of UEFA [3] ; according to the tournament regulations, the champion is awarded the cup and holds it until the draw for the qualifying tournament of the next European Championship [3] . A copy of the trophy is transferred to the eternal storage of the federation, whose team will win the tournament five times in total, or three times in a row [3] ; so far neither team has managed to do either one or the other.

A total of ten countries owned the cup, two of which do not currently exist. The most titled teams are the national teams of Germany and Spain , who have owned the cup three times.

The first winner of the Cup, Henri Delaunay is the team of the Soviet Union , the current winner is the national team of Portugal , who defeated the French team in the final of the European Championship in 2016 .

History

On June 6, 1958, the draw of the first round of the European Nations Cup, the future European Championship, took place in the Travelers Club hall of the Stockholm Hotel Forest. The trophy of the new tournament was also presented there - the cup, which is an antique amphora, was donated to UEFA by the chairman of the Football Federation of France, Pierre Pochonet [1] . The cup was made by the French jeweler Michel Chobillon [1] . With the filing of the then President of UEFA, Ebbe Schwartz, the trophy received the name of Henri Delaunay - the football functionary, the first UEFA Secretary General , who proposed and organized the European Championship [1] . Henri Delaunay died in 1955, not living five years before the first final tournament. The continuation of the case, Henri Delaunay was his son Pierre - the second UEFA Secretary General .

The USSR national team became the first winner of the Henri Delaunay Cup, having beaten the national team of Yugoslavia in the finals of the first European championship on July 10, 1960 at the Paris -based de Paris Park stadium.

In 1960-1980, the trophy was won by teams from Spain , Italy , Czechoslovakia and the Federal Republic of Germany . In 1980, the West Germans were the first to win the Henri Delaunay Cup twice. In 1980-1990, the teams of France , the Netherlands and Denmark were added to the winning teams. In 1996, the team of the already united Germany won their third cup in a row. In 2000, the French took their second cup, and in 2004 a new team-owner of the cup appeared - the Greek team .

Before the 2008 championship, UEFA decided to change the design of the Henri Delaunay Cup, having slightly increased its size [2] ; at the same time, the prize retained the name and style of the old cup [2] . Manufactured a new trophy by the British company Asprey London [4] . The updated cup was presented on January 26, 2006 in the Swiss city of Montreux before the draw for the qualifying tournament for the 2008 European Championship [5] [6] .

The first updated cup was raised by Spanish footballers, defeating the German team in the 2008 championship final [7] . In 2012 , on the fields of Poland and Ukraine, the Spaniards managed to repeat their success: the Italians were defeated in the final [8] . The Spaniards became three-time owners of the cup and the first team that managed to win the trophy twice in a row [8] . At the 2016 tournament , a new cup holder appeared - Portugal

Design

The original Henri Delaunay Cup, won by the Netherlands national team in 1988 , on display at the Museum of Amsterdam

The original Henri Delaunay Cup was created in 1958 by the French jeweler Michel Chaubillon [1] . It was a stylized silver amphora with a bas-relief depicting a young man playing a ball [1] . The cup was made at the same time with a marble pedestal on which the names of the winning teams were engraved. The height of the cup was 40 cm (with a stand - 50 cm), the weight reached 2.6 kg (with a stand - 8 kg) [4] .

The design of the first cup was similar to the design of the original trophy of the European Cup , donated by the French newspaper L'Equipe UEFA to present the winners of the main European club football competition created in 1955 [9] . After Real Madrid won it forever for 6 victories in the first 11 raffles in 1967, UEFA began handing another trophy for the victory in the Champions League [9] .

Before the 2008 championship, the main trophy of the European championships has changed a bit: it was slightly increased in size, as well as minor cosmetic changes. The cup became 18 centimeters higher and 2 kilograms heavier; now it began to weigh 8 kg, and its length increased to 60 cm [2] . The small figure with the ball on the back was removed, as was the marble pedestal. For stability, the amount of silver at the base of the cup has been increased. The names of the winning countries that were on the pedestal were engraved on the back of the cup. The British company Asprey London [4] was engaged in the manufacture of the new trophy; its cost was over 30,000 euros [10] .

Meet the Cup trophy before EURO 2012

Before the 2012 UEFA Championship, the Meet the Cup trophy was organized, within the framework of which the main trophy of the championship was in 14 cities of the host countries of EURO 2012 in Poland and Ukraine [11] . The trophy tour began on April 20, 2012 in Warsaw , and ended on May 26 in Odessa ; in addition to these cities, the championship’s main trophy also visited Gdansk , Poznan , Wroclaw , Lodz , Krakow , Katowice , Kiev , Ivano-Frankivsk , Kharkov , Donetsk , Dnepropetrovsk and Lvov [11] . As part of the tour, everyone could see the main trophy of the European Championship in the central squares of cities and take pictures with him.

When the trophy was displayed in Kiev, two men tried to abduct him [12] . May 12 in Kiev [13] , May 21 in Dnepropetrovsk [14] and May 24 in Lviv [15] the cup was attacked by activists of the FEMEN movement; despite the fact that they managed to drop the trophy from the pedestal, the cup itself was not injured.

After the European Championship, in August 2012, President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych received a small copy of the Henri Delaunay Cup as a gift from UEFA; UEFA President Michel Platini presented the gift at a meeting in Kiev [16] .

Owners

The Henri Delaunay Cup was owned by teams from nine countries, two of which currently do not exist. Taking into account the qualifying games for the last European Championship in 2012 in Poland and Ukraine , which was attended by 51 national teams of 53 national teams of UEFA (the teams of Poland and Ukraine automatically qualified as host countries of the championship ), we can conclude that all European UEFA teams have at least once tried to fight for the prestigious trophy.

The most titled teams are the national teams of Germany and Spain , who have owned the cup three times. Twice the cup was won by French football players and once by Soviet , Italian , Czechoslovak , Dutch , Danish and Greek football teams.
