According to the US Census Bureau , the county’s total area is 1,313,131 km 2 , of which 1,307.951 km 2 are land and 3.367 km 2, or 0.300%, are water bodies.
Population
According to the 2000 census [1] , 55,606 residents of 20,392 households and 14,804 families live in the okrug. The population density is 43.00 people per km 2 . On the territory of the okrug, there are 24,002 residential buildings, with a building density of about 18,00 buildings per km 2 . Racial composition of the population: white - 40.06%, African - Americans - 57.46%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.20%, Asians - 0.13%, Hawaiians - 0.01%, representatives of other races - 1.56 %, representatives of two or more races - 0.58%. Hispanics made up 2.79% of the population, regardless of race .
Of the total of 32.80% of the total number of households , children under the age of 18 live, 46.20% of the households are married couples living together, 21.50% of the households are single women without a spouse, 27.40% of the households households are not related to families , 24.00% of households consist of one person, 10.10% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.67 people and the average family size is 3.16 people.
The age composition of the district: 27.10% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 28.40% from 25 to 44, 23.40% from 45 to 64, and 23.40% from 65 and older.
