Prince Vasiliy Vasilyevich Mosalsky (sometimes Masalsky is found in the old literature) is a representative of the princely family of Mosalsk, dating back to the Karachian branch of the Chernigov princes. There is one interesting point related to its origin. In most of the primary and quite authoritative literature, he is listed as the son of Vasily Mikhailovich Mosalsky. For example, the Velvet Book, Dolgorukov 's Russian Genealogy Book , or the special volume work of the end of the 19th century by N. E. Brandenburg, The Rod of Mosalsky's Princes. At the same time, in some editions he is listed as the son of Vasily Mikhailovich's brother - Semyon Mikhailovich. For example, Leonty Voitovich "Princely dynasties of Eastern Europe" and the Slavic Encyclopedia (Kievan Rus and Muscovy).
The first who seemed to notice that the offspring of Semyon Mikhailovich and Vasily Mikhailovich were mixed up in the Velvet Book was Vlasyev in his work “The Offspring of Rurik”. And accordingly, the ancestor of the Koltsovs-Masalskys was Mosalsky, Vasily Semenovich , who had the nickname Ring or Koltsov, and Litvinov-Mosalsky, Vasily Vasilyevich became the ancestors of the Litvinovs-Mosalskys.
