Since the late 1850s, he published in the scientific periodicals of Italy, France, Germany and Switzerland the results of geological and paleontological studies in Piemont and Tuscany. Paleontological works on the study of marine mammals of the Tertiary and Quaternary periods, stratigraphy of tertiary deposits of the Pisa region.
In 1863 he published the first geological map of the region of La Spezia and the valleys of the river. Magra scale of 1: 50,000, which was an important step towards organizing a planned geological survey of Italy.
Initiator (1855) of the International Congress of Anthropology and Prehistoric Archeology, an active member of the International Geological Congress .
He was a professor at the universities of Genoa and Bologna, the rector of the University of Bologna. Honorary Member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences since December 13, 1908
