Geography
According to the US Census Bureau , the total area of the county is 2,470.862 km 2 , of which 2 426.832 km 2 is land and 44.030 km 2 or 1.760% are water bodies.
Population
According to the 2000 census [1] , 54,749 residents live in the district, consisting of 21,308 households and 15,043 families . The population density is 23.00 people per km 2 . There are 24,668 residential buildings on the territory of the district, with a building density of about 10.00 buildings per km 2 . The racial composition of the population: whites - 68.90%, African Americans - 23.10%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 5.10%, Asians - 0.20%, Hawaiians - 0.00%, representatives of other races - 4.70 %, representatives of two or more races - 0.60%. Hispanic made up 2.70% of the population, regardless of race .
31.50% of the total number of households are children under the age of 18, 50.80% of households are married couples living together, 15.80% of households are single women without a spouse, 29.40% of households households are not related to families , 26.50% of households consist of one person, 11.70% of households consist of elderly (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.50 people, and the average family size is 3.01 people.
The age structure of the district: 25.70% younger than 18 years old, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 27.40% from 25 to 44, 24.40% from 45 to 64 and 24.40% from 65 and older. The average age of a resident of the district is 37 years old. For every 100 females there are 92.60 males . For every 100 females over 18, there are 89.40 males .
