Mrinal Sen ( Beng. মৃণাল সেন , English Mrinal Sen ; May 14, 1923 , Faridpur , British India - December 30, 2018 , Calcutta , India ) is an Indian filmmaker and screenwriter who shot mostly films in Bengali . He is one of the representatives of the "parallel cinema" of India, in contrast to Bollywood films showing life in a realistic manner and touching on acute social problems.

For his contribution to the development of cinema, he was awarded the third highest government award Padma Bhushan and the highest Indian cinema award named after Dadasaheb Falke . He was awarded the National Film Award seven times as the best director and screenwriter.

Biography
Mrinal Sen was born on May 14, 1923 in Faridpur [3] . His family was middle class; she supported anti-imperial sentiments, rejected the caste hierarchy and religious obscurantism. He studied in Calcutta , studied physics at Scottish Church Colleg e, and then continued his studies at the University of Calcutta . Sen from his student years became close to the Communist Party of India , but was never a member of it. After graduation, he tried his hand at medicine, journalism and only then came to the cinema. For some time he held the position of sound technician at the Calcutta film studio.
Career
He shot his first film, Before Dawn, in 1955, where Uttam Kumar who had not yet reached stellar status, played the main role . To this day, the picture has not been preserved, and Mrinal Sen regarded it as a catastrophic failure [4] .
Success came to him only with the third tape “Wedding Day” (1960), which provided him with international fame, and strengthened after the film “ Bhuvan Shom ” (1969), filmed with state support. "Bhuvan Shom" was one of the first films belonging to the movement "New Cinema" in India [5] . It was also the first success after a series of five failures [5] . The film brought Mrinal Sung his first National Film Award for Best Director .
His next few films were openly political. At this stage of his work, he received most of his international awards. His films received four National Film Awards for Best Feature Film . Sen made his last film in 2002 at the age of 80. In 2004, he completed his autobiography, Always Being Born .

Recognition
Received wide national and world recognition. He was a member of the jury of the Berlin (1982) and Venice (1996) IFFs. Winner of the highest national cinema award named after Dadasaheb Falke (2005). He was appointed an honorary member of the Upper House of the Parliament of India (1998-2003). Honorary Doctor of a number of Indian universities, including alma mater. Several documentaries have also been filmed about Mrinal Sen.
