According to the United States Census Bureau , the county’s total area is 1,427,091 km 2 , of which 1,388,241 km 2 are land and 36,260 km 2 or 2.570% are water bodies.
Population
According to the 2000 census [1] , 22,086 residents of 8,691 households and 5,953 families live in the okrug. The population density is 16.00 people per km 2 . There are 10 455 residential buildings in the district, with a building density of about 8.00 buildings per km 2 . Racial composition of the population: white - 39.09%, African - Americans - 59.43%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.32%, Asians - 0.09%, Hawaiians - 0.05%, representatives of other races - 0.39 %, representatives of two or more races - 0.63%. Hispanics accounted for 0.73% of the population, regardless of race .
In the composition of 27.70% of the total number of households , children under the age of 18 live, 45.50% of households are married couples living together, 18.30% of households are single women without a spouse, 31.50% of households households are not related to families , 28.40% of households consist of one person, 13.20% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.44 people and the average family size is 2.99 people.
The age structure of the district: 24.30% under the age of 18, 6.90% from 18 to 24, 26.50% from 25 to 44, 24.90% from 45 to 64 and 24.90% from 65 and older.
