According to the United States Census Bureau , the county’s total area is 2,121,212 km 2 , of which 2 118,622 km 2 are land and 2,590 km 2, or 0.170%, are water bodies.
Population
According to the 2000 census [1] , the district has 49,063 residents comprising 18,267 households and 13,060 families . The population density is 23.00 people per km 2 . There are 20 520 residential buildings in the district, with a building density of about 10.00 buildings per km 2 . Racial composition of the population: white - 58.67%, African - Americans - 28.94%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.23%, Asians - 0.15%, Hawaiians - 0.07%, representatives of other races - 10.87 %, representatives of two or more races - 1.06%. Hispanics accounted for 15.14% of the population, regardless of race .
Of the total number of households , 33.20% are children under the age of 18 years, 52.20% of households are couples living together, 14.20% of households are single women without a spouse, and 28.50% of households households are not related to families , 24.50% of households consist of one person, 11.10% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.63 people and the average family size is 3.10 people.
The age composition of the district: 26.10% under the age of 18, 9.60% from 18 to 24, 29.30% from 25 to 44, 22.10% from 45 to 64 and 22.10% from 65 and older. The average age of a resident of the district is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 98.30 males . For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.60 males .
