General Information

The territory of the national forest covers parts of Larimer , Boulder , Gilpin and Jefferson counties.

Initially, since 1897, it was part of the Medicine Bow Forest Reserve. In 1910 it was renamed the Colorado National Forest, in 1932 - by decision of Herbert Hoover to the Roosevelt National Forest in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt , who founded many national forests.

From the north and east, Roosevelt National Forest is surrounded by Rocky Mountain National Park. The northern edge of the forest is the state border of Wyoming and Colorado.

Through the national forest flows the only officially designated national wild and picturesque river - Cache la Powder . This is a popular place for trout fishing, as well as for kayaking and rafting.
