The total length varies from 60 to 110 cm, but record individuals with a length of more than 1.5 m are known. Sexual dimorphism is observed - females are slightly larger than males. Keeled back scales. The torso is brown or olive-gray with noticeable dark transverse stripes that merge on the back. A black line stretches from the eyes to the posterior corner of the mouth. On the sides of the abdomen there is a chess pattern of dark and white scales. There are many color variations: transverse stripes can be red, brown or black, primary colors: red, yellow, chestnut or gray. Stripes can go on the sides on a light belly. Most individuals darken with age, but some retain a bright, contrasting color throughout their lives.
Oviparous snake. The female gives birth to 10 cubs.
It feeds on fish and various amphibians.
Lives in the following US states: Texas , Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South and North Carolina, Missouri and Illinois.
He loves places around freshwater reservoirs: rivers, streams, lakes, ponds and swamps. Very rarely found near brackish sea bays. It feeds on fish and amphibians.
