According to the United States Census Bureau , the total area of the county is 2,198,912 km 2 , of which 2,152,292 km 2 are land and 46,620 km 2 or 2,100% are water bodies.

According to the 2000 census [1] , the district is home to 55,225 residents of 21,644 households and 14,869 families . The population density is 25.00 people per km 2 . On the territory of the okrug, there are 24,297 residential buildings, with a building density of about 11.00 buildings per km 2 . Racial composition of the population: white - 97.37%, African - Americans - 0.26%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.87%, Asians - 0.26%, Hawaiians - 0.02%, representatives of other races - 0.59 %, representatives of two or more races - 0.64%. Hispanics made up 1.70% of the population, regardless of race .
Of the total of 32.60% of the total number of households , children under the age of 18 live, 56.80% of the households are couples living together, 8.10% of the households are single women without a spouse, 31.30% of the households households are not related to families , 25.20% of households consist of one person, 10.60% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone.
