Biography

Childhood

Paloma Picasso was born on April 19, 1949 in the city of Vallauris , France , in the family of the famous artist and sculptor Pablo Picasso and writer Francoise Gilo . The name "Paloma" in translation from Spanish means "dove" [1] . The girl’s childhood passed in an unusual setting, she was constantly surrounded by artists and creative people, which had a significant impact on the formation of the life path of the future fashion designer.

In 1953, Francoise Zhilo leaves his husband and takes with him two children - Paloma and Claude. Children are much less likely to see their father [2] .

In 1957, Paloma tried her hand at oil painting. “I do not think it was funny. Rather difficult! ”, She recalled later [3] .

In 1968 she entered the University of Nantes .

Career

Paloma began her career as a jeweler in 1968 in Paris , while working as a costume designer. Her purchase of a market rock crystal necklace for the leading woman reflected her artistic ingenuity and was highly praised by critics. Inspired by success, she enrolled in jewelry courses. Soon after this incident, there was a proposal from Yves Saint Laurent , who commissioned Paloma to develop an accessory design to accompany one of his collections, and by 1971 she worked for the Greek jewelry company Zolotas [4] , was engaged in the design of handbags and shoes for an Italian company and worked with furs for Jacques Kaplan [3] .

After her father died in 1973, Paloma lost interest in design for some time and became depressed. Pablo Picasso did not leave a will, and his illegitimate children - Paloma, her brother Claude and half-sister Maya - went to court for the division of property, which was estimated at $ 250 million. Anna received 90 million and agreed to help the French government, which also received huge sums of property taxes, to create the Picasso Museum in Paris [4] .

In 1974, Paloma starred in the erotic film " Immoral Stories " by the Polish director Valerian Borovchik , which earned him scandalous popularity. In the late 1970s, Paloma Picasso was known as a regular in the legendary New York disco club Studio 54 , where celebrities like Andy Warhol , Mick Jagger and many others liked to spend time.

In addition to the main activity, Paloma was engaged in the creation of scenery for the Argentine playwright and director Rafael Lopez-Cambil (also known as Rafael Lopez-Sanchez), whom she married in 1978. The wedding was an event because the clothes for the ceremony were created by Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld themselves, who returned the culprit to the design, and she herself for a long time remained the muse of Parisian couturier wedding dresses.

In 1980, Paloma signed a contract with jewelry company Tiffany & Co. Even then, the name Paloma Picasso became a well-known brand of jewelry [3] [4] . A characteristic feature and the signature of her work was the dove and the red color. In the same year her first collection saw the light.

In 1981, with the support of Paloma, the Picasso Museum opens. The following year, Picasso moves to New York [3] .

In 1983, Paloma was included in the International list of the Hall of Fame of the most stylish people [3] .

Soon, Picasso tries himself in new areas of design. In 1984, she founded her own brand of the same name, launching her first fragrance “Paloma Picasso” for L'Oréal [4] . Three years later, she and her husband opened a company branch in New York , where the Paloma accessories collection received international recognition for its impeccable quality and design.

In 1989, the American Council of Fashion Designers confers Palome the title of Best Accessory Designer of the Year [3] .

In 1999, Paloma divorced Rafael and soon married the French physician Eric Thevenne [5] [6] . They moved to Switzerland , where in Lausanne Paloma founded a special fund whose funds were used to highlight the work of her parents, especially her mother, whose artistic efforts are almost unknown in Europe .

In the early 2000s, Picasso, known for her bold colors, changed her home accessories. Once bright primary colors gave way to gray shades, gold and tan colors [4] .

In 2010, Paloma celebrated its 30th anniversary with Tiffany & Co. , presenting a new collection based on her love for Morocco [3] [7] . In 2011, she debuted another collection called Venezia, in honor of the city of Venice .

In 2011, Paloma received an award for her art achievements from the National Museum of Women's Art in Washington , DC [3] .
