On the night of September 21, 1942, 1045 infantry regiment crossed the Volga under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Timoshkin, the first regiment from the division.
At the end of September 1942, the division took the line on the left bank of the Volga: Banny ravine - Mamaev Kurgan - Dolgiy ravine. Cruel and bloody battles lasted 137 days and nights. Siberian warriors did the impossible - they stopped the enemy. Here, at Stalingrad, they took their main battle, proved the words of the famous division sniper V. Zaitsev: “There is no land beyond the Volga for us!” With their feat, their life they deserved the assessment given by Marshal V. I. Chuykov: “The Siberians were the soul of the battle for Mamaev Kurgan, for Stalingrad. "

  • In September 1942, the division was transferred to Stalingrad and included in the 62nd Army of the Southeast (from September 28 Stalingrad, from January 1, 1943 Don) front. Since September 21, units of the division have been fighting fiercely with select units of the Nazis trying to capture Stalingrad and reach the Volga. In the battles for the plants "Red October" and "Barricades", Mamaev Kurgan , square them. On January 9 and in other areas, Siberian warriors showed courage, heroism and stamina.

“For Mamaev Kurgan ... Batyuk’s glorious four-time order-bearing guards division fought the most. The regiments of this division arrived on the right bank on September 21 and September 22 already entered battle on the line of Dolgiy ravine. Then the division seemed to grow into the Mamaev Kurgan, in its spurs, and fought on it until the end, before joining January 26, 1943 with the Don Front ....
This division brought up warriors, which not only all Stalingraders knew, but the whole country: the battery commander, the famous tank destroyer Shuklin; the commander of a mortar battery, the mines of which did not hit the target, - Bezdidko; famous snipers - Vasily Zaitsev, Victor Medvedev, Akhmet Avzalov and many, many other soldiers and officers - heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad ... ..
The combat team of the commanders and political workers of this division passed through Kastornaya, Stalingrad, Zaporozhye and Odessa, through Lublin, Poznan and triumphantly completed the military campaign in Berlin. "

Command

  • The division was commanded by:
  • Ostroumov, Sergey Alexandrovich (12/15/1941 - 02/26/1942), brigade commander
  • Batyuk, Nikolai Filippovich (02.27.1942 - 07.28.1943), Major General
    [2] .

“A few words about the commander ... of the division, Nikolai Filippovich Batyuk. He arrived in the city as a lieutenant colonel, and left him after the defeat of the army of Paulus by the general. In this commander, three invaluable qualities were especially well combined: commander's perseverance, courage and partisanship. He knew how to be strict and fair, he was feared and loved; he was often in sight of his soldiers. He had sore legs, sometimes he could barely move, but he did not sit out in the dugout: to the front edge, to his observation posts, he left with his wand, and returned to his dugout on the shoulders of the adjutant, and only at night so that no one would see . Batyuk hid his illness in every possible way, and I only found out about it in January, when he could no longer move without assistance. He was not shy about telling any boss and subordinate the truth in the eyes, even if it was bitter. His reports did not require clarification and verification, they were always true.
General Batyuk did not reach ... Berlin. His life was cut short in Ukraine, near Slavyansk ... He ... was the soul of the battle for Mamaev Kurgan, for a city on the Volga. "
