History

The former clergy house, now the building of the church of St. Clement

By the end of the 19th century, there was only one Catholic church in Odessa - the Church of the Assumption , which no longer accommodated all parishioners. In 1892, representatives of the Catholic community applied for a plot on Balkovskaya Street for the construction of a new church, which would also house clergy houses, a parish school and a shelter for the poor and the elderly. The application was granted. The choice of Balkovskaya street district was due to the fact that the “Polish Colony” was located here, where a large number of immigrants from Poland lived [1] .

In March 1903, construction was started, Bishop Edward von Ropp celebrated mass on this occasion [2] . Construction went on private donations, in general, was completed by 1906, although finishing work continued after that. The author of the project was the architect V. A. Dombrovsky , the temple was designed in the Neo - Gothic style, two bell towers 64 m high served as the architectural dominant. The temple was built of red brick with white stucco decorations. The temple had seven altars, several marble sculptures and images, an organ, carved benches. The area of the temple was 3220 m², it contained about 4 thousand parishioners [2] . Near the temple there were shelter buildings, a school, a canteen and a clergy house (the only surviving building).

In 1932 the temple was closed, and in 1936 it was blown up [2] .

In 1993, the clergy house at the former church was transformed into a church, which, like the destroyed church, received the name of St. Clement. The community is fed by priests from the Order of the Pallotins .
