History

In the fall of 1891, the Greek Holy Trinity Orthodox parish rented part of the evangelical church on West 53rd Street near Ninth Avenue for $ 50 ($ 1,300 in current terms) per month [7] [2] . It was the second Greek Orthodox church in America, and the first in New York [7] [2] . Like other Orthodox parishes in the United States, it was under the jurisdiction of the Aleutian and Alaskan diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church .

In 1904, a Gothic-style temple was purchased at Episcopal Church on 153 East, 72nd Street, where the parish moved [7] In 1927, the church on East 72nd Street burned down [7] [2] .

In 1929, land was purchased at its current location, and a new neo-Byzantine-style church was built on it [7] [2] . Eleanor Roosevelt , wife of the then Governor Franklin Roosevelt , participated in laying the foundation stone of the cathedral on September 14, 1931 [7] .

On March 4, 1932, Holy Trinity Parish moved to its current place [7] [2] . The total cost of the construction of the cathedral amounted to 577,000 dollars (99,700,000 dollars in current terms) [7] . Archbishop of America Athenagoras (Spira) consecrated the cathedral on October 22, 1933 and called it: "the cathedral of all Hellenism in America" [7] .

In 1949, a school was established at the cathedral [7] .

In 1926, opera singer Maria Callas was baptized here [8] . In 2001, television journalist and former political adviser George Stefanopoulos and comedian actress Alexandra Wentworth were married here [9] . Here, in 2011, Christopher Nixon Cox, grandson of President Richard Nixon , and Andrea Katsimatidis, daughter of billionaire John Katsimatidis, married [10] .

Architecture

The architects of the cathedral were Kepp Rainsford, John Thompson, and Gerald Holmes; they later designed Hunter College Uptown, which is now known as Lehman College [11] .

The exterior is made of neo-Romanesque red brick and limestone [12] [11] . The interior is decorated with Byzantine mosaics, imported Italian stained-glass windows of Byzantine colors and shapes; the walls, columns and the altar are made of Bottichinsky marble [7] . The iconography on the dome and other parts of the temple was created by Georgios Gliatas, a student of the icon painter Fotis Kondoglu [7] . The church rests on the foundation of the Presbyterian Church of Jan Hus [13] .

Current status

The cathedral is the home parish for 800 families, and hosts dignitaries and visitors. The cathedral hosts regular worship services (which are broadcast on television). There are Sunday schools, afternoon schools, Cathedral schools (K-8 classes), Bible courses, and various services and brotherhoods at the cathedral [1] [14] .

Since June 2012, the rector of the cathedral is Anastasios Gunaris [15] .
