According to the United States Census Bureau , the total area of the county is 664.128 km 2 , of which 558.664 km 2 are land and 105.439 km 2 or 15.880% are water bodies.

According to the 2000 census [1] , the district has 8,080 residents comprising 2,898 households and 2,043 families . The population density is 15.00 people per km 2 . There are 4,189 residential buildings in the district, with a building density of about 7.30 buildings per km 2 . Racial composition of the population: white - 91.86%, African - Americans - 6.72%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.30%, Asians - 0.17%, Hawaiians - 0.01%, representatives of other races - 0.40 %, representatives of two or more races - 0.54%. Hispanics accounted for 0.73% of the population, regardless of race .
Of the total number of households , 25.10% are children under the age of 18 years, 59.80% of households are married couples living together, 8.10% of households are single women without a spouse, and 29.50% of households households are not related to families , 26.80% of households consist of one person, 12.20% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.26 people and the average family size is 2.70 people.
