Biography
From the nobility of the Ryazan province [1] . In 1892 he graduated from Moscow University with a gold medal for his essay "Double Stars".
From 1895 he worked at the Moscow Astronomical Observatory , from 1903 - at the Pulkovo Observatory .
In 1896-1901 he repeated the observations of the Schweitzer zone.
Engaged in double stars , compiled a catalog of stars from 0 to + 4 ° (according to the program of Bonn Ferris).
His catalog was the first timely completed large catalog released in Moscow.
In 1899, Modestov published a valuable monograph on double stars.
After him, systematic work on the meridian circle was resumed only from 1918 by S. A. Kazakov (zone 50–55 °); this work, which lasted for two decades, remained unfinished.
