According to the United States Census Bureau , the total area of the county is 1,028.231 km 2 , of which 1,017.871 km 2 is land and 12,950 km 2 or 1.160% are water bodies.

According to the 2000 census [1] , 52,537 inhabitants live in the district as a part of 20,495 households and 14,612 families . The population density is 52.00 people per km 2 . On the territory of the district there are 22,400 residential buildings, with a building density of about 22.00 buildings per km 2 . The racial composition of the population: whites - 46.92%, blacks - 40.56%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 10.20%, Asians - 0.31%, Hawaiians - 0.02%, representatives of other races - 1.16 %, representatives of two or more races - 0.84%. Hispanic made up 2.08% of the population, regardless of race .
In the composition of 32.70% of the total number of households live children under the age of 18 years, 51.30% of households are married couples living together, 15.40% of households are single women without a spouse, 28.70% of households households are not related to families , 25.00% of households consist of one person, 9.40% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.53 people, and the average family size is 3.01 people.
