Biography
Stern was born into a Jewish family living on Long Island . Initially, the boy was given the Hebrew name Zvi, but later the child was renamed in the American manner - Howard. His father, radio engineer Ben Stern, instilled in Howard a love and interest in radio from childhood, and the boy saw himself in dreams as a famous presenter on a rock and roll radio station.
After school, the shy Howard enters Boston University , choosing the specialty of " mass communication ", and there he publishes his first parody radio show "Chatty Bagel Hour".
After graduation, Howard takes a lead on a small New York radio station, where for four dollars an hour he hones his skills and acquires his first fans and detractors. After that, he got caught between the same small radio broadcasts of Detroit and Hartford, until he was finally noticed and invited to the major WNBC radio station in New York. However, Stern did not last long, smoking on the air and constantly quarreling with his superiors, and he was fired. But by this time, the ratings of his programs were already so high that the unemployed were almost unable to stay: Stern immediately received an invitation from a rival organization - the radio station WXRK. Realizing the success, he again took up "ether hooliganism."
He expertly knew how to make listeners begin to demonstrate “dirty clothes”, while not hiding his own. At the same time, Howard’s personal popularity was growing rapidly, and the radio station’s rating was rising, so employers sometimes looked through their fingers at the fines that had to be paid for the broadcasts of the brawler Stern. The Federal Communications Commission also tried to close its broadcasts several times. In 2004, when the law determined half-million fines for indecent behavior on the air, the commission still managed to close. The dismissal turned out to be scandalous, however, Stern was again in demand - this time in the independent command of the Sirius Satellite Radio.
In 2006, Forbes magazine ranked him among the top ten “most popular celebrities,” ranking 7th. In 1993, his autobiography, published. In 1997, a feature film shot on this autobiography was released, in which Stern and some of his friends and colleagues played themselves. The film and the book were commercially successful.
His radio show included such famous people as Miss Universe 2002 Oksana Fedorova , pornstar Jenna Jameson , rock musician Peter Steele , trainer Richard Simmons and others.
March 21, 1994 announced his intention to run for governor of New York from the US libertarian party . [3]
