Biography

Estonian by nationality. From a peasant family, was born into the family of the owner of the farm. In 1873-1875 he studied at the parish school in Vyandra , in 1876-1878 - at the Kodavere parish school. In 1878-1882 he studied at the Valka teacher seminary, after its completion in 1882-1883 he worked as an assistant teacher. In 1883-1885 he gave private lessons and served as a volost scribe in Orajõe. In 1890, he married Alida Hermine Annette Amberg. They had a son and six daughters.

In 1885-1905 he was the director and taught at the Vyandra Parish School. According to other sources, in 1907 he worked as a teacher at the Fennersky Parish School. Chairman of the Fenner Agricultural Society. He owned a land allotment of 50 acres. He had the title of personal honorary citizen.

He later became a journalist. At the end of the 19th century and in the first decades of the 20th century, he was one of the most influential Estonian literary critics and political publicists. In 1898-1905, the editor of the magazine "Linda"; since 1906, an employee of the Estonian newspaper Postimes , in 1923-1929 its editor. He was a close friend and ally of Jaan Tynisson .

On February 6, 1907 he was elected to the State Duma of the 2nd convocation from the congress of commissioners from the volosts of the Livonia province . He was a member of the Constitutional Democratic Faction . Member of the Agrarian Commission.

Subsequently, he was elected a member of the Riigikogu of the 1st and 2nd convocations. The author of memories.

He was buried in the Old St. Peter's Cemetery (Vana-Peetri kalmistu) in Tartu. In 1939, a monument was erected to him in Vyandra.

Chess

Anton Jurgenstein was a passionate chess player. In December 1913, he won in Tartu during a simultaneous game against future world champion Jose Raul Capablanca . This was the pinnacle of his chess achievements. This game is described (including the recording of moves) by Jürgenstein himself in the book "Minu mälestused" (My Memoirs) II, Tartu, 1927 (chapter "Little Chess Intermezzo ", pp. 139-142), as well as by Walter Heuer in the book "Male lugu" (Chess Stories), Tallinn 2008 (pp. 506-508). Writer Heino Puhvel wrote a short story on this subject, “The Great Day of Anton Jürgenstein” ( Looming , 1998/12, pp. 1834-1850).
