Biography

Vladimir Gavrilovich Wafadi was born on January 10, 1911 in Moscow. He spent his childhood and youth in Voronezh . In 1931, Wafadi was admitted to the State Optical Institute (GOI), where he consistently went from a laboratory assistant to a junior, then a senior researcher. From 1951 to 1962 he was the head of the laboratory of optical location and infrared technology GOI. In 1931 he entered the correspondence department of the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Leningrad University . In 1936, under the guidance of the future academician A. A. Lebedev, V. V. Balakov and V. G. Vafiadi created the first geodetic light range finder with interference modulators , which made it possible to measure the distance by the time this distance traveled by light signals [1] . The measurement accuracy was 2-3 m at a distance of 3.5 km [2] . This new direction in long-range measurement was further developed in the work of Wafiadi with employees. In 1938-1939, the employees of the State Optical Institute Balakov V.V., Vafiadi V.G. and Lebedev A.A. developed a light range finder based on measuring the speed of light . The Wafiadi studies related to the direct measurement of the speed of light [3] [4] [5] adjoin this direction.

In 1934, he took part in the work of the Elbrus Integrated Scientific Expedition (ESCE) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR , headed by A. A. Lebedev, in the part of studies of solar radiation in the spectral region 100-1000 nm [6] [7] .

During the Great Patriotic War in Yoshkar-Ola , where the GOI was evacuated, he continued to work with regard to wartime tasks on new schemes and technical solutions for light-range finders and spotlights, which have a greater working range than existing ones. In 1944, despite the lack of a diploma of higher education, he defended his thesis on the subject "Pulse spotlight-rangefinder." At the same time as working at the GOI from 1944 to 1960, he taught at the Leningrad Air Force Engineering Academy named after A.F. Mozhaysky , head of the department of infrared technology. Prepared a number of textbooks [2] [8] [9] .

At the end of the war he was sent as a member of a group of scientists and specialists to Germany. He studied the Zeiss experience in creating infrared optical devices, in particular, homing missiles of the FAA [10] . In the post-war period, with his participation in the GOI, several types of light range finders were created, which were used in geodesy and construction [11] [12] . In 1948-1960 he carried out scientific management of the creation at the GOI and the development in serial production of a number of aircraft heat direction finders and homing heads, satellite orientation devices, medical thermal imagers [13] . At the same time, he worked as a consultant at the Central Design Bureau (TsPKB-2) of the Krasnogorsk Mechanical Plant .

In 1962, at the invitation of the rector of the Belarusian State University. V.I. Lenin (BSU) A.N. Sevchenko , who worked at the GOI from 1934 to 1953, Wafiadi went to work at the BSU, where he headed the Department of Electrophysics. Under his leadership, work was carried out in the field of modulation and demodulation of radiation [14] [15] , light-ranging, optical location, optical pyrometry, photovoltaic automation, astrophysical measurements and medical research. He supervised the work on non-contact temperature measurement of slightly heated bodies [16] . He taught special courses “Photoelectric Automation” and “Electronic Optics”, general courses “Space Physics” and “History of Physics”. Prepared a textbook for universities "Photoelectric Automation" (1966) [17] .

V. G. Vafiadi was a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Applied Spectroscopy, the first editor-in-chief of the journal “Bulletin of the Belarusian State University. Series 1 ”, a member of a number of scientific councils for awarding academic degrees and titles. Author or co-author of more than 70 scientific papers, including 3 monographs. Fluent in French, translated into Russian (jointly with A. M. Kotov) “Elementary notes on optics” by J.-P. Marat [18] .

He retired in 1972, after which he soon moved to Leningrad. He died on May 17, 1986.
