Novoshakhtinsky Drama Theater

In 1954, the professional director Alexander Trofimovich Sutyagin created the People’s Theater in Novoshakhtinsk, on the basis of which in 1996, by the decision of the mayor, the Novoshakhtinsky Drama Theater was created. The theater collective declared itself to be the play “Voice of America” based on the play by B. Lavrenev, and took 1st place at the regional theater show. In 1959, for the play "Mashenka", a play by A. Afinogenov, the theater (the third in the Rostov region) was awarded the title "People". For almost a quarter century, the collective founder of the theater, Alexander Sutyagin.

In 1985, the theater was headed by a former pupil of Alexander Trofimovich Sutyagin, an actress of the theater, a young director Svetlana Sopova. Novoshakhtins fell in love with their theater, it became truly their brainchild. In the most difficult years, the hall was always full. In 1992, the Novoshakhtinsky People's Drama Theater limited liability partnership was created (the teams from the Lenin Mine and the Shakht-Kredobank Mine provided active assistance in this transformation). And already in 1996, the theater was registered as a municipal institution “Novoshakhtinsky Municipal Drama Theater”. In 1997, the Novoshakhtinsk administration handed over to the theater the destroyed and flooded building of the former Shakhtar cinema with an auditorium with 300 seats. Construction lasted 10 years. The theater staff with the help of theater enthusiasts, industrial enterprises and the administration of Novoshakhtinsk managed to restore the building.

In 2007, at the initiative of the head of the theater Svetlana Sopova and with the support of the governor of the RO, Vladimir Fedorovich Chub, the minister of culture of the RO, Svetlana Ivanovna Vasilieva, the chairman of the board of the Rostov branch of the Union of Theater Workers of the Russian Federation, People's Artist of the USSR Mikhail Ilyich Bushnov, the Novoshakhtinsky municipal drama theater was included in the regional budget, and the eighth professional theater appeared in the Rostov region. In 2005-2006, 10 million rubles were allocated from the regional budget for the overhaul of the theater. After the overhaul of the stage and the auditorium, the theater has modern lighting, modern stage mechanics and a modern interior of the auditorium.
