Kharkiv district ( Ukrainian. Kharkivsky district ) is an administrative unit in the north of the Kharkov region of Ukraine . The administrative center is the city of Kharkov (not part of the district).

Geography
The district is located in the north of the Kharkov region .
Kharkiv , the administrative, cultural and economic center of the region, surrounds the city from the south, west and east.
The Kharkov region occupies a favorable economic and geographical position and is part of the suburban zone of Kharkov .
In the north, the region borders on the Belgorod region of Russia , in the east with Volchansky and Chuguevsky districts, in the south with Novovodolazhsky and Zmievsky , in the west with Dergachevsky and Valkovsky districts of Kharkov region .
Administratively, the district is divided into 2 city, 14 village and 14 village councils, which are subordinate to 109 settlements: 2 cities, 14 villages, 93 villages.
The main rivers are Lopan , Kharkov , Udy .
History
On March 7, 1923, the Government of the Ukrainian SSR adopted a new system of administrative division of the republic. Counties and parishes were replaced by districts and counties. In the Kharkov province, instead of 10 counties, 5 districts were created, instead of 227 volosts - 77 districts, including Lyubotinsky, Kharkiv, Lipetsk, Tsirkunovsky, Merefyansky and Korotichansky.
For forty years, the territory of the district has undergone administrative-territorial changes 5 times.
Within the modern borders, the Kharkov district was formed, according to the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the Ukrainian SSR of January 4, 1965 with the administrative center in Kharkov .
Demographics
The population of the district is 182.7 thousand people [2] , which is 6.46% of the population of the region (1st place among the regions), including about 122 thousand people living in urban conditions. In total, there are 109 settlements.

Economics
The district is part of the Kharkov industrial hub and has a developed diversified industry, which is represented by industrial enterprises of machine-building, light, food, building materials and other industries.
Far beyond the region, JSC “Merefyansky glass factory” is known for its products. Kuryazh Homebuilding Plant JSC, Nadia JSC for the production of polyvinyl chloride window blocks, Rogan Cardboard Factory JSC, Santekhstroydetal JSC, Opora JSC, Merefyansky Mechanical Plant, Artyomovsky Distillery, etc.
An important sector of the economy of the region is agriculture. Agricultural land occupied - 100.5 hectares, agricultural land - 103771 hectares, under arable land - 71187 hectares. In the agricultural sector of the Kharkiv region, 38 agricultural enterprises of various patterns of ownership operate, as well as 183 farms (of which 13, which have land over 100 hectares) and a number of small subsidiary farms, as well as enterprises: Agrotechservice, Agroplemservice "," Agricultural chemistry ", a workshop for the production of food products - oils, flour, cereals, sausages, etc.
There are three research institutes in the region: the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing, the Institute of Livestock and the Institute of Sericulture of the Ukrainian Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
An important place in agricultural production is occupied by suburban farming; The region specializes in animal husbandry, poultry farming, vegetable growing, grain production and gardening.
Transport
The territory of the district is saturated with railways and roads, pipelines. The total length of gas pipelines is 1,451.53 km, 72,256 households are gasified. The length of roads is 1372.9 km, including with hard surfaces - 598.2 km. Such important highways as M-18 ( E 105 ) Moscow - Simferopol , M-03 ( E 40 , E 50 ) Kiev - Kharkov pass through the territory.

The history of the area is closely connected with the names of famous people. Here lived and worked the ataman of the Zaporizhzhya Sich - Ivan Sirko, Ukrainian philosopher G. S.
