Commercial success

Released in 1986, the single reached number 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 , becoming its fourth top 5 hit on the chart in a row; the song also reached the top of the Hot R & B / Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Dance Club Play charts . The song reflected the main idea of the album, demonstrating women's independence. In the UK, the song remained outside the top 40, reaching 42 positions.

Music Video

The music video was filmed by Mary Lambert , who previously shot the “ Nasty ” video for Janet. The video shows Jackson as a young singer preparing for her first concert. The heroine swears at her parents because she wants to leave them and live independently. Father against her plans. When he refuses to talk about it, she runs away from home. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Jellybin Johnson and Jerome Benton meet her along the road. They take her to the concert hall, where she sings the single "Control" and shows that she wants to be "the one who has control over her life." The video version of the song is different from the landscape version. The nine-minute video was presented on the iTunes Store on April 27, 2007. Janet Dubois, who played a major role in the Good Times series with Jackson in the 1970s, starred as her mother in a video. The choreography for the clip is set by Paula Abdul .

The concert was filmed at the Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles . Both Lambert and producer Sharon Orek recall the video as a difficult experience; in 2011, Orek said that this was the “worst nightmare” among the clips she produced. Viewers who were told that they would see a performance by Janet Jackson expected a free concert. “Instead, we gave them 50 doubles with Janet singing 'Control' to the soundtrack,” Orek said. [1]

At that time, Janet Jackson fired her father, Joe Jackson, from the position of her manager. Orek said he was very angry and took out his discontent with others. Joe told Orek that he would not allow Janet to sit on the trapeze on which she descended to the stage if her life was not insured for $ 1 million. She told the label about this, where she was told: "Don't say anything to him, but don't tell him no, because we don't say no to Joe Jackson." This decision did not work, and he became even more angry and threatened Orek with violence. Finally, Lambert told A & M that she and Orek would leave work on the video unless they told Joe Jackson that his daughter was insured [1] .

The situation worsened later during filming. A & M told Lambert that they want to see more white people in the concert hall. There were many spectators everywhere, but simply changing their position in the hall and asking someone to leave the hall turned out to be a difficult task. Eventually, people began to understand what was going on and became angry. Lambert told the label representative that she could not continue to work because of the possibility of a scuffle in the hall, and then he went out and explained everything to the audience, after which they finished shooting [1] .

Live performances

Jackson performed the song in all her tours, except for the Janet World Tour . In 1990, she opened her first tour with this song, Rhythm Nation 1814 Tour . The room began with Jackson, emerging from under the stage on a steel elevator, resembling an oil platform. She appeared in the fog and began to sing a song. [2] The song was performed as part of a potpourri along with The Pleasure Principle , Nasty and Throb during The Velvet Rope Tour in 1998. [3] Poppuri on the show on October 11, 1998 in New York , in Madison Square Garden , was shown during a special broadcast on HBO - The Velvet Rope: Live in Madison Square Garden . The number is also presented on a DVD release with a recording of the 1999 The Velvet Rope Tour - Live in Concert [4] . During the All for You Tour in 2001 and 2002, “Control” was performed in a potpourri with “ What Have You Done for Me Lately ” and “Nasty”. Denise Sheppard of Rolling Stone said that this number was “another crowd favorite; perhaps best described as the 'bitter' part of the night, ”also adding that“ this singer who has been performing on stage for 28 years knows what the viewer wants and gives him that. ” [5] The last concert of the tour was on February 16, 2002 at the Aloha Stadium in Hawaii and was shown on HBO. This recording was later released on the Janet DVD : Live in Hawaii [6] .

On December 4, 2006, Janet opened the Billboard Music Award with the number "Control" / " The Pleasure Principle " / " So Excited . " [7] [8] Janet decided to open her first tour in seven years, Rock Witchu Tour , with a pop-puri from The Pleasure Principle, Control and What she did. After the interlude, Jackson, wearing a mohawk -style hairstyle, takes the stage, accompanied by fireworks and smoke, and performs a poppuri [9] [10] . As part of the promotion of her second compilation, Number Ones singer performed an eight-minute number of six hits at the American Music Awards 2009 . The number consisted of “Control”, “ Miss You Much ”, “What you Done for Me Lately”, “ If ”, “ Make Me ” and ended with “ Together Again ”. The speech was greeted with applause and applause from the audience [11] [12] .
