History
Tor Books was founded by Tom Docherty In 1980 and sold to St. Martin's Press in 1986 [1] . In 2001, Macmillan Publishers and its subsidiary St. Martin's Press became part of the German publishing group Georg von Holtzbrinck [2] , expanding its interests in the American market. Tor Books, therefore, became part of one of the world's largest publishing conglomerates, while retaining some independence [3] .
Currently, Tom Doherty continues to be president of the Tom Doherty Associates association, which includes Tor Books and Forge imprints . Forge publishes various fantastic works, historical novels, thrillers, westerns, as well as mysticism and classics. Tor Books, in addition to science fiction, also publishes books for young readers, using the imprints of Starscape and Tor Teen [4] .
Tor UK, an imprint in the UK , also specializes in science fiction, fantasy and horror. For children and teens, Tor UK releases works based on universes from computer games. Tor UK has an open manuscript submission policy that allows any author to send his work to the publisher and try to publish his own book [5] . Many Tor UK writers have received prestigious literary awards, and among the grandees one can distinguish authors such as Douglas Adams , China Myeville , James Herbert and Amanda Hawking [6] .
E-books
Most publisher books are available for purchase electronically. Since 2012, they have been sold without DRM protection [7] , and in 2013 a statement was made that the lack of protection had no effect on sales statistics [8] .
