Chrysopolis [3] [4] ( Greek ρυσούπολις [2] ήρήσούπολη [5] ) is a small town in Greece . Located at an altitude of 20 meters above sea level [1] on the right (west) bank of the Nestos River ( Mesta ), 24 kilometers east of Kavala , 152 kilometers west of Thessaloniki and 345 kilometers north of Athens . The administrative center of the community (Dima) Nestos in the peripheral unit of Kavala in the periphery of East Macedonia and Thrace . The population of 8,885 inhabitants at the 2011 census [2] . An area of 46.89 square kilometers [1] .

North of the city passes highway 2 " Egnatia ", part of the European route E70 .
History
In 1375-1376 the region was invaded by the Ottoman Turks. In the Ottoman period , the city was founded, which was called Sari-Shaban ( tour. Sarı Şâban , Σαρ Σαμπάν ) from tour. sarı "yellow, gold" and the name of Shaban, a local Turkish landowner and keeper of the inn [6] . July 11, 1913 during the Second Balkan War was annexed to the Kingdom of Greece . It was renamed Sapei ( Σαπαίοι ), after the name of the Thracian Sapea tribe who lived in this area [7] . In 1919 ( ΦΕΚ 251Α ) the community of Sapei (Sari-Saban) was created. In 1925 ( ΦΕΚ 40Β ), the city was renamed Chrysoupolis [8] from the Greek. χρυσός "golden."
In the past, residents of the city engaged in the service of passing travelers. At present, agriculture is developed in the region on a fertile plain formed by sediments of the Nestos River.
