Biography
Grigory Surkov was born on January 27, 1916 in the village of Lobanovka (now the Novospassky district of the Ulyanovsk region ). After graduating from four grades of school, he worked on a collective farm . In 1937 - 1940 he served in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In January 1942, Surkov was re-drafted into the army. Since May of that year - on the fronts of World War II. He was wounded five times in battles [1] .
By September 1943, Lieutenant Grigory Surkov commanded a machine gun company of the 360th Infantry Regiment of the 74th Infantry Division of the 13th Army of the Central Front . He distinguished himself during the battle of the Dnieper . On September 23–25, 1943, Surkov’s company took part in battles at the bridgehead on the western bank of the Dnieper in the vicinity of the villages of Chikalovichi and Posudovo in the Bragin district of the Gomel region of the Belorussian SSR , repelling several German counterattacks and inflicting heavy losses on the enemy. In those battles, Surkov was seriously wounded, but continued to fight [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 16, 1943 for “courage and heroism shown in the battles at the captured Dnieper bridgehead”, Lieutenant Grigory Surkov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 3231 [1 ] .
After the war, Surkov was sacked. He lived and worked in the village of Wet Bugurn, Tsilninsky District, Ulyanovsk Region. He died suddenly on May 25, 1966 [1] .
He was also awarded the orders of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree and the Red Star , a number of medals [1] .
In honor of Surkov, the street in Wet Bugurn was named [1] .
