Avilova, Olga Matveevna

Olga Matveevna Avilova ( September 10, 1918 , Bezhitsa , now within the boundaries of Bryansk , December 27, 2009, Kiev [1] ) - Soviet and Ukrainian surgeon , medical scientist in the field of thoracic surgery and pulmonology , teacher, doctor of medical sciences (1974 ), professor (1975), head of the department of thoracic surgery and pulmonology of the Kiev Medical Institute for Advanced Medical Studies (1975–1988) [2] . Laureate of the USSR State Prize (1974) [3] , Honored Scientist of the Ukrainian SSR (1982). Honored Doctor of the Ukrainian SSR (1962).

Biography

Born in the city of Bezhitsa (now one of the administrative districts of Bryansk ).

Graduate of the Smolensk Medical Institute (1941). Member of the Great Patriotic War. She worked as a surgeon in the ranks of the army, later - head of the surgical department of the Bryansk Regional Hospital.

Since 1957 - Head of the Department at the Kiev Medical Institute .

In 1974 she defended her doctoral dissertation “ Resection and plastic surgery of the bronchi and mediastinal trachea ”. A student of academician N. M. Amosov .

She died on December 27, 2009 in Kiev. She was buried in the capital's Berkovets cemetery .

Scientific activity

Under the leadership of O. M. Avilova, an emergency care service was created for victims of a chest injury, spontaneous pneumothorax , foreign bodies of the respiratory tract and esophagus . The initiator of the creation of the department of polytrauma .

The author of about 300 scientific papers, including 2 monographs; inventor , patent holder (in particular, “A method for the treatment of expiratory stenosis of the trachea and bronchi”).

Under her leadership, 1 doctoral and 19 master's theses were completed.

Memory

On the eve of the 100th birthday of Olga Avilova, the National Bank of Ukraine in September 2018 issued a commemorative coin dedicated to her [4] from the series “Outstanding Personalities of Ukraine”. On the obverse of the coin, a stylized composition symbolizing thoracic surgery is placed on a mirror background. On the reverse is a portrait of Olga Avilova with a signature under it, containing, in particular, the date of birth and death: 1918–2009.
