The Cannons are considered one of the strongest NBL teams of the 1980s, when the club won three league titles and lost one more time in the final. Closer than others, only Brisbane Bullets , who reached the final four times, but won only two league titles, were able to reach the club from Canberra.

History

The Cannes were one of the founding teams of the NBL and played in the 1979 debut season. In the debut season, the team showed a result of 13-5 and took part in the championship match, where they lost St. Kilda Saint 94:93.

In the next few seasons, the team could not reach the playoffs, but already in 1983 the Cannes won their first league title, defeating West Adelaide Bearcats in the final with a score of 75:73. The most valuable player in the finals was named Phil Smith. Already in the next season, the club was able to repeat last year’s success, beating 84:82 in the Brisbane Bullets finals.

In the next three seasons, the Cannes entered the playoffs, where each time they lost in the Bullets semifinal. Canberra was able to win her third league title in 1988. Smith was again included in the first team of all NBL stars, and was also named the best defensive player. The following season, the North Melbourne Giants were able to take revenge by winning the championship series over the Cannes.

The next time, the Cannes managed to reach the playoffs only in 1992, where they lost to the future South East Melbourne Magic champions in the first round. In 1996, Canberra reached the semifinals, where they lost to the Melbourne Tigers . In 1997, the Cannes again managed to reach the playoffs, where they again lost to the Giants.

In the late 1990s, the team experienced financial difficulties and in December 2002 completely went bankrupt. Despite this, the Cannes managed to play all the remaining matches of the season, but all the star players and legionnaires left it. Canberra finished the championship with a result of 11-19 and at the end of the season the club was bought out and moved to Newcastle.

On October 23, 2009, it was announced that the Canberra Cannons would be resurrected through the Canberra Gunners club and will play in the Southeast Australian Basketball League [1] .
