Biography

Peter William Shorrocks Butterworth was born February 4, 1919 in , a suburb of Stockport . He studied at William Hulme's Grammar School .

World War II

With the outbreak of World War II, he left to serve in the fleet with the rank of lieutenant commander (equivalent to captain of the 3rd rank ). In 1940 he was captured in the Netherlands . He was kept in the concentration camp near Frankfurt , in June 1941 he fled from there through underground tunnels, but three days later, after 43 kilometers, he was caught by the Hitler Youth . Butterworth later joked that it was after this incident that he could never work on a movie set with children again. After he tried twice more to escape, but also unsuccessfully. He was transferred to the camp, where he met the Englishman [2] , who lived to see the end of the war, became a scriptwriter and wrote scripts for many episodes of Up franchise. It was this franchise, films and series, that brought Butterworth fame, which played a major role there. Butterworth helped organize a mass escape through the undermining from this camp: he and Rothwell performed improvised concerts in terrible voices, other inmates loudly booed and giggled, which distracted the guards and prevented them from hearing the noise of the undermining created [3] . It was based on his recollections that director shot the tape in 1950. He wanted to see the leading actor, of course, Butterworth himself, who had just begun his acting career, but he did not go through the casting: he did not look heroic enough and athletic. The only thing the director could do: the brave Peter Howard got a name in honor of Peter Butterworth.

In addition to Rothwell, Butterworth met in Nazi camps with future actors and [2] , with whom he remained friendly until the end of his life and occasionally starred together.

Career

Butterworth first appeared on the wide screen in 1948: he played the postman in the movie William Comes to the City. The director of this tape, Val Guest , made a strong friendship with Butterworth, and later they repeatedly worked together. Butterworth first appeared on television in 1950 in the television series How Do You View? which is famous for being the first comedy television series in the history of Great Britain.

Since 1965, Butterworth began to appear regularly in the films of the series [3] , and for 13 years he appeared in 18 films and series of the franchise.

In just 31 years of his film career, Butterworth has starred in 116 films and series.

Personal life and death

In 1947, Butterworth married Scottish comedian , with whom he lived his whole life until his death. She survived her husband for 32 years. From this marriage, the couple left two children: Tyler (born 1959; actor) and Emma (1962-1996).

January 16, 1979, 59-year-old Butterworth played the Widower of Tunka in the pantomime Aladdin in one of Coventry's theaters. After the performance, he went to his hotel to prepare for the performance the next day. The next day, he did not appear in the theater, so they went to search for him at the hotel, where Butterworth was found dead. The cause of death was myocardial infarction . The actor, who did not live three weeks before his 60th birthday, is buried in the cemetery of village in East Sussex .
