Biography
The son of Diego Alvarez de Toledo (1541-1583) and Briand Beaumont (1540-1588), daughter and heiress of Luis de Beaumont (d. 1565), 4th Earl of Lerin and 3rd Marquis of Huescar (1530-1565) from a marriage with Aldonsoy Folk de Cardona . The grandson of the famous Spanish commander Fernando Alvarez de Toledo , 3rd Duke de Alba.
In December 1583, after the death of his childless uncle Fadrique Alvarez de Toledo ( 1537 - 1583 ), the 4th Duke of Alba ( 1582 - 1583 ), Antonio Alvarez de Toledo inherited the titles of Duke de Alba, Duke de Huescar , Marquis de Coria and others.
In 1588, after the death of his mother Briand de Beaumont, Antonio Alvarez de Toledo received the hereditary titles of Count Lerin and Constable Navarre .
In 1599, the King of Spain Philip III (1598-1621) awarded him the Order of the Golden Fleece .
From 1622 to 1629, Antonio Alvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alba , served as Viceroy of Naples in Italy. In this position, he faced the war for the Valtellina Valley ( 1620 - 1626 ), crop failure and rising food prices in 1624 , an earthquake in Naples in 1626 (10 thousand people died as a result), frequent raids by Turkish corsairs and constant economic requisitions from the Count-Duke de Olivares .
In 1629, King Philip IV (1621-1640) appointed him his mayor, that is, the head of the royal court.
Family and Children
He was married to Mancia de Mendoza, daughter of Don Inigo Lopez de Mondos y Pimentel ( 1536 - 1601 ), 5th Duke del Infantado ( 1566 - 1601 ). Their kids:
