Biography
James David Forbes was born on April 20, 1809 in the city of Edinburgh . He studied at the university of his native city , and then from 1833 to 1860 he was a professor of physics at the alma mater [4] .
Known for his research work on heat, heat radiation, electricity, optics, glacier research.
In 1834, he discovered the polarization of heat rays, observed their interference. He studied the thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity of bodies, in particular, metals. One of the first to demonstrate the dependence of thermal conductivity on temperature [5] .
In 1843, the scientist was awarded the Royal Medal of the Royal Society of London [6] .
James David Forbes died in 1868.
