Professional career
Since 1859 - assistant professor of physics at the Agricultural Academy in Popelsdorf (near Bonn ); since 1865 - professor of physics at the Riga Polytechnic . Since 1869, at the University of Graz , in 1876-1900, a professor at the Dresden Higher Polytechnic School [2] .
Contribution to Science
August Toepler is an ingenious experimenter known in science for his work in optics, molecular physics, electricity, and acoustics. In 1865, he invented a vacuum mercury-piston pump (Töpler pump). He built an induction machine (1865), a vibroscope for observing vibrations of sounding bodies, a siren as a sound source of a given frequency (Toepler siren), an air damper to a galvanometer . In 1867, Toepler proposed a method for studying optical inhomogeneities of the medium, the so-called “schlieren method” or “Toepler method” [2] .
