According to the US Census Bureau , the total area of the county is 1,999.482 km 2 , of which 1,958.042 km 2 is land and 15,000 km 2 or 1.980% are water bodies.

According to the 2000 census [1] , 320,677 inhabitants live in the district, consisting of 120,101 households and 76,384 families . The population density is 164.00 people per km 2 . There are 129,793 residential buildings in the district, with a building density of about 66.00 buildings per km 2 . The racial composition of the population: white - 50.29%, African Americans - 45.16%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.24%, Asians - 1.72%, Hawaiians - 0.08%, representatives of other races - 1.16 %, representatives of two or more races - 1.35%. Hispanic was 2.72% of the population, regardless of race .
31.50% of the total number of households are children under the age of 18, 43.70% of households are married couples living together, 16.30% of households are single women without a spouse, 36.40% of households households are not related to families , 29.10% of households consist of one person, 7.30% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone.
