Biography
Elfried Wimmer was born on November 30, 1881 in Lower Shrems in the family of a farmer from Waldviertel. He studied theology and natural sciences at the University of Vienna and Graz . Since 1905, he taught natural history at the Austrian School of St. George in Istanbul . In 1907 he became a priest.
In his free time, Wimmer traveled to Asia Minor , enriching his botanical herbarium. From 1918 to 1958, he was first a priest in Vienna, then a chaplain in Wampersdorf . At the same time, he actually worked as a researcher at the Vienna Museum of Natural History and headed the Elizabethan Hospital of Sisters of Mercy in Vienna. In 1944, he was appointed as his correspondent.
Wimmer was the author of a section of the book by A. Engler Das Pflanzenreich , dedicated to the Lobelievs, published in 1943-1953.
On May 2, 1961, Franz Elfried Wimmer passed away.
The main herbarium of E. Wimmer is kept in the Vienna Museum of Natural History (W). Also, samples collected by him are stored in the Berlin Botanical Museum (B), Geneva Botanical Garden (G), Kew Botanical Gardens (K), University of Michigan (MICH), New York Botanical Garden (NY) and Smithsonian Institution (US).
