Story
Tokiko Amamiya is a beautiful young woman who is forced to raise her little son Hiroshi alone: her husband has still not returned from the war (he was captured and must be repatriated over time). Tokiko barely makes ends meet, gradually selling his things. The illness of the son becomes a serious blow. To find money for treatment, a woman goes to a brothel, where she spends one single night. Although at that moment no other way was visible, she soon began to regret her act, which was facilitated by a conversation with her friend Akiko.
A month passes and the husband returns home. On the very first evening, Tokiko confesses everything to him. Finding no place for rage and despair, her husband goes to the same brothel, where he meets a 21-year-old prostitute named Fusako. She admits that she did this not from a good life, but to feed her family. Amamia assures Fusako that she can still find her happiness in life, and promises to find her a normal job. His workmate Satake is ready to help with this, and also persuades Amamia to forgive his wife and make peace with her. But coping with her feelings is not so easy: when Tokiko once again asks for forgiveness, her husband pushes her away, as a result of which she rolls down the stairs and is seriously hurt. Only after that he fully realizes her suffering, offers to forget about what happened and start life from scratch.

About the movie
The 41st film of Yasujiro Ozu was shot from May to September 1948. Collaboration with screenwriter Ryosuke Saito began during the war and continued after it ended when the script for the film “The Moon Rised” ( Tsuki wa noborinu ) was written. However, for various reasons, this project was never implemented (the film "The Moon Has Rised" was shot by Kinuyou Tanaka only in 1955). Instead, Ozu and Saito began work on the film “Chicken in the Wind,” bearing the imprint of the losses suffered by the director and Japan as a whole. Like Ozu, deprived of support in the Tokyo neighborhoods destroyed by the war, the heroine of Tanaki lost her home and was forced to rent a room with strangers. The film is considered not the most successful work of the director. In particular, he was criticized by the screenwriter Kogo Noda, which led to the resumption of their cooperation with Ozu. [one]
