Description

Small varnish chervets and shchitovki (diameter from 2 to 5 mm). They feed on plant sap. Produce resinous or resinous discharge, which form a dense shield over them (Varshney 1977 [4] , 1984 [5] ; Lit 2002 [6] [7] ). The most famous species is Kerria lacca (Kerr) , known for its sticky resinous secretion (varnish), which is commercially used as a natural polymer called shellac . The word "lacquer" comes from the Persian or Hindi word laksha , meaning "hundreds of thousands," which indicates the large number of insects needed to produce shellac. The major producers of shellac are India , Thailand and the PRC . Shellac is also produced in Bangladesh , Myanmar, Vietnam and Sri Lanka. In 1956-1957, India exported 42,840 tons [2] [3] .
